New Braces

Congratulations on your new braces!

We want to make your treatment as pleasant as possible so if you have any questions, problems, or complaints, please let us know.

Your appliances are an important part of your treatment.  You will be wearing them until your treatment is completed, so it is important that you follow our instructions for proper care and continue to see your general dentist for cleanings and check ups.  Keeping the appliances clean and eating the right kinds of food is very important!

During the first few months of treatment you may think your teeth look worse than they did when you started.  This is normal and should look better to you in a short time.  You may develop mouth ulcers at first but they should disappear after the skin in your mouth "toughens up" and you become more accustomed to your appliances.  Your wax should help you with this problem too.

Some common terms you may hear us use during treatment are:

brackets- the small, metal or ceramic "dots" that you see on your front teeth.

bands- the metal rings that are cemented on your back teeth.

springs- small coils placed on the main wire to create space and uncrowd teeth quickly.  Springs are normally worn for approximately 1-4 months.

chains- small elastic chains which enable the doctor to close spaces or rotate teeth.

arch wires- the main wires used with your braces- they fit from one corner of your mouth to the other.  You have one on the top and one on the bottom.

tie wires- the small wires that are wrapped around each bracket to hold the main wire in place.

With your cooperation, our office can assure you of a result you will be proud of!

We are looking forward to seeing you over the next few years and again, welcome to our practice!
